CD Reviews

Alternates acoustic crispness with synthesizer wash
Robert Greiveldinger | Milwaukee, WI, USA | 08/06/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Although originally released in 1987 on the now defunct 'Audion' recording label, this is one of Mr. Phillips' more consistently interesting collections of original modern instrumental music. As mentioned in the title of this article, the material on this disk does a better than average job of showcasing both Anthony's acoustic prowess, as well as his masterful composition and performance skills on various synthesizers. Like many of his other albums in the 'Private Parts & Pieces' series, this collection of 'bits', or sonic ideas, is best heard in one complete sitting, so that the relationship of the individual pieces can be heard as a total 'idea', and not just disconnected parts. One small warning: Don't let the high pitched droning of the "Ice Flight" suite of songs that kicks off the album put you off; "Beach Runner", "End of the Affair", "Elevenses" and Goodbye Serenade" are all wonderful acoustic compositions, and the synthesizer cuts "Vanishing Streets - Slow Waves, Soft Stars" are sublimely excellent."
