Synopsis

Product Description
"Weill", the music of German composer Kurt Weill, was recorded live in performance with the famed WDR Big Band and Broadway actress/singer Anne Kerry Ford in Cologne, Germany's Philharmonic Hall under the musical direction of legendary jazz arranger Roger Kellaway. Selections from Kurt Weill?s German and American songbooks ( as well as the French ?Youkali?, sung here in a rarely-heard English translation) as well as the relatively unknown comic gem "Song of the Rhineland" ( a collaboration between Weill and Ira Gershwin) are presented here in a style in keeping with Weill's original arrangements . As well as the 28-piece big band arrangements, several intimate tracks (also arranged by Kellaway) were recorded with Los Angeles musicians, including pianist John Boswell and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith. A duet with Ford and Tony-nominee Brian Lane Green on "Tango Ballad" is a highlight of this collection. ?Weiil? was produced by four-time Grammy nominee Robben ! Ford, who is also the featured guitarist here.

"I have known and admired Anne Kerry Ford for many years, but with "Weill" she has clearly outdone herself in achieving the greatest brilliance of her illustrious career. Clearly she is in her element with this material--meeting the ambitious musical challenges head on as well as the depth and range of the lyrics--She is ever the actress, interpreting each song like a full-length play or movie, and one feels her utter joy and passion for Weill's music. She is at once soulful, comical, sexy, heartbreaking and always highly intelligent. Additionally, the orchestrations are thrilling and the band plays with great energy, confidence and virtuosity. But Ms. Kerry Ford leads the way with surefooted choices that exude great style, exquisite taste and grace, and I cannot imagine anyone else performing these songs any better."

"Should one need a CD that catapults them out of this weird mess that we, as a culture, seem to be in - this is the CD. When I hear Ms. Ford's take on "Surabaya Johnny", I find I am spellbound into taking the emotional ride with her! And her version of Pirate Jenny just makes my hair stand on end, it's so good. Anne Kerry Ford's solid grip on this material is truly awe-inspiring. Her voice and theatricality, combined with the complexity of Weill's music, creates a kind of sublime feast for the ears and the imagination.

This CD is a must for any serious fan of Kurt Weill!"
