CD Reviews

Ms. Nesby Does it Again.
The Groove | Boston, MA | 12/17/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"While it doesn't quite match up to her previous efforts "Put it On Paper" or "I'm Here for You," Ann Nesby's "Make Me Better" still packs a strong punch of contemporary gospel. Her potent voice is set to a diverse mix of r&b and house beats with lyrics that are her most inspirational to date. But this time around, she also gives us a dash of hip hop flavor, as shown on the tracks "It Won't Be Long" (with Knowledge) and "Happy" featuring King Cyz. Those who want to get their disco on needn't worry; Nesby doesn't disappoint here. Baltimore-based Basement Boys (who have worked with Crystal Waters and Ultra Nate) produce the house jams "Shelter" and the title-says-it-all "Can't Stop Praisin' His Name." Chucky Thompson, who has produced hits for Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans, contributes to cuts like the title track and the funky "Thank You." One listen to this album makes it easy to see why Nesby is a Grammy winner. She surrounds herself with the right material for her gusty voice. If the music in "Make Me Better" won't lift your sprits, not much else will."
5 STARS = GRAMMY NOMINATION!

"Make Me Better, Nesby's 3rd solo effort since 1996 (from her Sounds of Blackness Departure), has again been nominated for a Grammy at the 46th (2004) Annual Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Soul/Gospel Album. This album is a must have for music lovers who want inspiration, the feel of clubbing, great vocals over HOT tracks! Make this a stocking stuffer this holiday season!"
A "diva" yet to find an audience!

"When Sounds of Blackness emerged in the early 90's, the lead vocals supplied by Ann Nesby allowed the ensemble to score a number of successful hits. Capitalizing on her association with the group, Nesby was able to break out on her own in 1996. Although her debut disc from that year did not produce a monster hit, it still showcased the many sides of this supremely gifted vocalist. Her Grammy-winning "Put It on Paper" from 2002 is known for her collaboration with legendary soul man Al Green on the title cut. Both albums, featuring a couple of ambiguous gospel tracks, were more geared for the urban contemporary listener as opposed to gospel fans. Perhaps, it was this turn in genres caused some confusion among her throngs of fans. Nesby returns to her roots with an album that should make fans of both take notice. While all songs have an inspirational theme, the rhythms, backgrounds, and arrangements are satisfying to all ears. Best cuts on the thirteen-track disc are: "He'll Make You Wanna", the ethereal "With Open Arms", "Happy", the funky "Thank You", the danceable "Can't Stop Praisin' His Name", "Giving All My Love", and "Stay in Your Lane". Maybe this release will garner the singer the recognition of which she so deserves."
