"Angela Sanchez, pianist wife of that up-and-coming tenor sax star, Tony Malaby, has come up with quite a disc of her own.The couple, natives of Tucson, AZ, has been in New York for some six years now. That they've managed to connect with an absolute top-line rhythm duo--Tom Rainey, drums and Mitch Formanek, bass--indicates their status in the Big Apple. This disc, featuring all Sanchez original compositions, showcases the couple as major figures in the nu jazz scene. From the first notes of the first cut, it's obvious that Sanchez and Malaby share a unique jazz vision. Angular, harmonically open, sophisticated jazz defines their approach. It may take a while of the average jazz fan to get a fix on their vibe, but once he or she does, I think there'll be lots of rewards.For one thing, the odd melodic/harmonic/rhythmic approach bears lots of listening without descending into cliche. For another, all of these distinct artists have unique and commanding voices on their particular instruments. Finally, repeated listens begin to reveal a profound conversation between the various members of the group, as well as sonic richness seldom found in more conventional discs.Definitely worth checking out for the more ambitious jazz listener."
