CD Reviews

Too tough/Teaser: Angela Bofill, I love it all!
Walter F. Rice | Sacramento CA USA | 04/19/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When I was a teenager I fell in love with the new folk music of the early 1960's around Bob Dylan and others who were doing that genre of music. I also enjoyed the new developing expression including folk-rock. I lived in San Francisco at that time, and would go the Filmore Auditorium to enjoy whatever was playing - which included Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Jefferson Airplane, or Muddy Waters, and always a great experience for me. And then I also loved The Beatles and Rolling Stones, the Supremes, among many others. In the early 1970's, I somehow lost interest in following music. Then, at the beginning of the 1980's, I thrust myself deeply into contemporary music, and I discovered Soul music in a big way. I would listen to an artist on radio, and would buy new albums and then buy used albums so I could experience the whole artist or group. Another part of it for me, is music is not just the hits, I have always had very favorite songs that were not hits, and didn't come out as singles.

Angela Bofill came out in the late 70's, and she is one of my all time favorite singers. I understand is there is so much good music of all kinds that no one person can experience more than a small part of it. i also do know that people do have different tastes in music. However, Angela Bofill is one I fully enjoy.

To put my personal experience into context, some time ago, I lost most of LP's from the 60's to the 80's, so I was thrilled when I bought 'Too Tough/Teaser' (from Amazon) and heard these two beautiful albums from when Angela Bofill was at the height of her recording career.

I must have not heard these in 10 years. Now that I just have, I have to say I did not remember how good these are. I love most of these songs, they invigorate me.

So many of these songs are love songs, many about first love (targeted to teenagers), but these songs are intelligent and imaginative expressions of love themes. My appreciation of teenage songs is there are always some that are much more than for teenagers, and, to me so many of Angela's are much more.

As the first reviewer reported, Angela had at least two reported strokes, starting in 2007. She did not have medical insurance. Groups of musicians gave benefit conerts for her, but she needs much more help. If you google her name, you will find her personal web site, and you will be able to give her a personal contribution.

Angie has a song on 'Teaser' which is appropriate to share, 'I'm on your side'. She sings 'I'm on your side, when times go hard, and you need some understanding, I'm on your side, when times get rough and know-one else can care enough, I'm on your side to be for you'."
