GLORIOUS SOUND BUT AVERAGE PROGRAMMING

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This one is for the Russophile collectors or those who like to swoon and wallow in the sheer lushness and sweetness of romantic cello sound. It is a total immersion into the vale of slavic melancolia. Beautifully recorded and worth getting to hear on audiophile equipment for the full ambience of this rich sound. It is immaculately recorded giving the impression that you are seated close to the front with some of the best seats in the house. My only gripe is that a greater range of Russian romantic repertoire for cello was not explored in fact too many piano pieces were used as transcription material, when there is so much more interesting work out there. Too many rehashed salon pieces instead of some original pieces by Glinka, Davidov or Gretchaninoff et al. The programming needed some fine tuning with more variety in the tempos and character of the pieces themselves. The ear grows weary with long stretches of slow tempo. But at 71mins one can immerse oneself in Lethe. A fine recording and beautifully played."
What a lucious sound!

Lush performances of gorgeous gems

"This album is truly a treat. Diaz has put together a wonderful collection of lesser known encore-type pieces which he plays beautifully, with a lush romantic sound. He seems to have an affinity for the Slavic soul, and Samuel Sanders renders his usual impeccable, sensitive accompaniments. A wonderful find!"
