Synopsis

Album Description

Assembled on this well-documented three-CD set are all of the Bach cantatas for the period from Christmas to Epiphany. Cantata BWV 190 "Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied," has been reconstructed by Ton Koopman for this recording. Begun in 1994, this series of the Complete Bach Cantatas was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian in England, and was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. Originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, it has been revived by Challenge Classics. The series continues to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach.

"These Christmas Cantatas of Bach are, on occasion, music Bach has stolen from himself. They are seldom done and I think this is the only recording of many of them. Koopman does his early music sound and forces are small and very accurate. Soloists are good and sound is excellent. I am pleased with my purchase."
