Amps For Christ is the brainchild of Henry Barnes, a former member of Man Is the Bastard, best-known for building all of his noisemaking guitars and amps. While his previous releases may have been a bit on the inaccessible side of experimental, Beggars Garden is surprisingly easy to listen to. The 34-track CD draws on plenty of Celtic influences, with Barnes somehow turning electronica blips and beeps into jigs worthy of the next Chieftains album. While listening to Garden, you keep expecting Barnes to tear apart these folkish tunes and break into a wall of guitar feedback. It never happens. Instead, you get the lo-fi equivalent of the Incredible String Band: lots of noodling, lots of background noise, but plenty of interesting melodies that usually end right as you're getting comfortable. --Jason Verlinde
