CD Reviews

A good point of departure

"This is a good place to jump from if you're interested in listening to Amon Duul II or any German rock from the late 60s/early 70s. The frustration to overcome, though, is that it's all but impossible to find their original albums, which, as is the case with most truly progressive music, are much more vital than "best of" collections. It would have been nice to see the record company make the effort to release their more vital albums (especially Phallus Dei, Yeti, Carnnival in Babylon, and Wolf City). Still, this does cover the range of their work, from the hard rock/improv masterpiece of Yeti (if you can find the japanese import, buy it!!!) to the euro glamrock of Utopia and Viva Trance. Imagine rock'n'roll without the blues - if this idea doesn't horrify you, but rather seems challenging, you'd probably dig Amon Duul II. And if you want the full story, check out Julian Cope's book Krautrocksampler. It's the best book on the subject out there (one of those great desert island books), and covers all the German bands with terrific detail and genuine affection."
Sehr Gut and getting immer besser

"Another worthy krautrock compilation CD.More or less reminds me of Germany's reply to Jefferson Airplane.Like the Airplane,Amon Duul II has a female vocalist.Shrat Kroten, who certainly tends to shine on most of the disc's gems, such as "Archangel Thunderbird","Surrounded By The Stars" and "Henriette Krotenschwanz".Guitarist Chris Karrer seems to be the band's mainstay.Other good tracks include "Soap Shop Rock","Utopia No.1","Melted Moonlight" and the truely amazing "Race From Here To Your Ears".For the record,Amon Duul II still exists to this day, with at least three original members.some good thing DO last."
