CD Reviews

Amon Duul - 'Die Losung' (Thunderbolt) 2 1/2 stars
Mike Reed | USA | 08/04/2005
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Wanted to make it clear that 'Die Losing' is NOT the usual Amon Duul album.Turns out it's more progressive than krautrock,as the band is well known for.I would only recommend this title to fans that have the first six to eight Amon Duul II lp's and wish to add to their music collection. Also turns out that Hawkwind resident poet, the late Robert Calvert is on this CD.Tracks that I thought were decent include "Urban Indian","Visions Of Fire",the title cut "Die Losing" and "Drawn To The Flame,Part 2".Read somewhere this release is actually a compilation, also that one-time Amon Duul II bassist Dave Anderson and drummer John Weinzierl had a major disagreement that 'Die Losing' was never really finished.Listen for yourself and you decide.Nice cover, though."
Perhaps 1989's Best Release

"I rate this disc 80 on a scale of 0 to 100. Every bit of four stars. SELLING POINTS: A) All Star Line Up - John Weinzeirl, Dave Anderson, Guy Evans(VAN DER GRAF GEN.), Julie Wareing, Ed and Joey Ozric(OZ.TENTICLES), "THE LATE GREAT" Robert Calvert(HAWKWIND)...in full flight...(His final studio work yet to be released) "That I,m aware of"...Plus the rest of AMON DUUL U.K. B) R.C. does lead vocals on six tracs. C) Intro/Outro on "They Call It Home" utilizes a Didgeridoo(Aborginal Wind Inst.)...This is my favorite trac w/ a hot orientalish lead voc. by Julie Wareing. D) Album cover reminiscent of HAWKWIND'S "Astounding Sounds Amazing Music" LP. from 1976. E)Great "on the water" "camping" "N2O" "Metaphysical" music. If you like this disc, check out R.C.s "Test-Tube Concieved" 1986. Also the rest of A.D.U.K...."Meetings With Men-Machines..." 1984 is their next best. The main detractor of "Die Losung" is "Drawn To The Flames parts 1 and 2" are essentialy two versions of the same arrangement...one has backing vocs. by J.W. and a different rythm guitar tempo/style...I listen to one or the other and the run time is 38 mins. 46 mins. total run time. Also the recording has an unfinished quality and no bonus songs for disc release...Perhaps this is due to Robert Calvert "Finding The Way" in Aug. 88' after living 43 years of an amazing life. He was a talented, fruitful performer and does not deserve the critisism he and Dave Anderson recieve from some of Amazon's reviewers! "Die Losung" is a must have for R.C. fans and a should have for DUULites and HAWKheads...THANK YOU AMON DUUL U.K.!!! and AMON DUUL 2!!! I appreciate you both........P.S. What else from 1989 do you still listen to? My 4 star rateing is based in part on the FACT that 89' like most of the 80s' was a barren, nearly fruitless musical year, in my "67-81 was the best" jaded opinion."
