CD Reviews

Where have I been for the past year?

"And how does that question relate to American Nightmare?Well, I wasn't going to many shows. I wasn't buying many records. And I certainly wasn't feeling the same about hardcore as I had back when I was 16 or 17. But, while scanning the net for new music I came across some new bands I hadn't heard. I downloaded a ton of songs hoping there would be something out there for me.That was May, 2001. Scan ahead about a month and a week. I've found myself with more free time and decided to dig into the 300+ songs I downloaded in May. I had three songs from American Nightmare's self-titled album. I put the first one on..."Protest Song #00." Approximately 2 minutes and 6 seconds later I had been destroyed and put back together again. "Sore Throat Syndrome" and "F*** What Fireworks Stand For" produced the same effect. Not since I had first heard C.R. (Compassion Revolution) has a band immediately made want everything they've ever done and to see them.I bought the CD. As a whole, it's just as insane and furious as the first three songs I'd heard. The lyrics surprised me. They aren't as politically and socially driven as I had hoped, but they're well-written and personal. And the more I read them, the more I like them.Do yourself a favor, get this. Now. Unless, that is you're not into music that makes you want to run 10 miles and scream your heart out."
Emotional and Aggresive

"american nightmare may not be the very best hardcore band out there, but they are one of the best. wes' lyrics are among the best, they are well thought out, and very emotional. the music behind it all is well played.Protest Song #00 - my favorite song off the cd, its emotional and fast pace. Definite stand out.Sore Throat Syndrome - One of the more mellower songs from AN, i mean it still has the fast pace, but the riff behind it makes it seem much more mellow. good song all in all... What Fireworks Stand For - Not really what it sounds like, really good song but i thought it would be more political, still one of the greatest. The Ice Age is Coming - Short and sweet, its only like 40 seconds long, and Wes practically raps, good stuff for being so short. Please Die! - another stand out song, this is my 2nd favorite, i love the lyrics and the music behind this song, definetely one of ANs best. The Day Music Died - Good song, has a fast pace, but all AN songs do. good, but not the greatest.Farewell - This version is much better than the version of Background Music (they're first full length) and a good closer to a great EP.i love every song on this cd, its only 11 minutes long, but its worth the money if your into american nightmare. they have some of the best lyrics, and catchy fast pace songs, one of my favorite hardcore bands of today."
