CD Reviews

"Two more classic Porter and Dolly LP's on CD"

"An amazing deal in that you get 2 classic Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton albums on 1 CD. Both in-studio recordings have never seen the light of day since their original releases and finally those who have never heard the albums now have a chance to hear Porter and Dolly at their peak.

Just coming off of winning the Vocal Group of the Year in 1968 Porter and Dolly released "Always, Always" and it's success was immediate. Debuting on the Billboard charts on August 2,1969 the album went to # 5 country and # 162 pop and yielded 2 hits; the title track went to # 16 and "Yours Love" went to #9. Dolly also wrote 3 of the best tracks ; "No Reason to Hurry Home", "My Hands are Tied", and the tear jerker "Malena", written in the same vein as "Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark". The album is without a doubt one of the best Porter/Dolly duet albums. Their singing is strong, the material pure country, and the sound is very much late '60's Nashville. Exceptional. "Always, Always" has 12 tracks and the album cover was shot on the set of the "Porter Wagoner Show". Dolly's wig is also the same one she wears on the cover of her "My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy" LP released the same year.

"Two of a Kind", not as strong an album as "Always,Always" is nevertheless amazing. With 10 tracks Porter and Dolly sound superb. The neat thing about this album is RCA did not release any of it's tracks as singles to country radio, although "The Pain of Loving You" is well known as a famous Porter/Dolly duet. A co write the song was covered by the "Trio"- Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou in 1987. "Two of a Kind" went only to # 13 on the country charts and became one of the duets lowest charting albums. Debuting on Billboard on March 6, 1971 the album also went to # 142 pop. Dolly also wrote "Curse of the Wild Weed Flower" and another Porter co-write "Two of a Kind". The best songs on the album are all Dolly written; "The Flame", "The Fighting Kind", and "Is it Real" a song that I have always believed if covered by the right artist could be as big a song as "I Will Always Love You".

A fantastic price. Buy this collection. Also, don't forget to pick up the duos 1980 masterpiece "Porter and Dolly" available too from Amazon."

"This is one incredible bargain from American Beat Records. They have done a most excellent job remastering these two classic Porter+Dolly albums.Although I'm a bit partial to "records",it's certainly nice to finally have what I consider the greatest duo in country music history on CD.The only other available CD(besides various greatest hits compilations)is Porter&Dolly from 1980.That is great as well.Buy this NOW for some of the purest, honest country music ever recorded. It's really beautiful stuff.

I'm hoping American Beat will release the others as well...they deserve alot of praise and thanks for this release.Too bad todays country music isn't this good.In fact, there really isn't anything that comes close. You'll really enjoy this!!One word sums this up........"Awesome"!!!!"
