CD Reviews

Outstanding vocals by ALICIA!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a big fan of Alicia's voice and style since her Grupo Limite debut. I most say that this new cd released by her,it's her best solo release to date.

I heard the first single from this cd "Que no se Entere"on spanish television and was impressed with the powerful vocals, music arrangements and song lyrics that I had to buy the cd.

I was totally blown away by other songs in the cd..such as my favorite.."Insensible a ti(me pone a mil)" & "Que Te parece".

Excellent overall cd by one of the best female voices in spanish music--ALICIA VILLARREAL!"
A 'MAGNIFICO' GRAMMY-NOMINATED MARIACHI PERFORMANCE !!
RBSProds | Deep in the heart of Texas | 11/19/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Five MUSICAL Stars! Wow!! This magnificent Latin Grammy-nominated CD is by the Grammy-winning Alicia Villarreal, who is recognized as one of Latin America's finest singers. The wonderful CD cover photo showing the beautiful laser-eyed Alicia decked out in a sombrero, striking a mariachi pose but without the ornamented 'traje de charro', speaks for itself. Actually, the theme of this double platinum CD is a woman's pride and celebrates the triumphs and tribulations of femininity. From the standpoint of production values, musical arrangements, musicians, and performances, this CD is a wonderful experience and is produced by the super producer/musician/songwriter Joan Sebastian, a Latin music legend since his rise in the 1970's.

Once called "the next Selena", Latin Grammy-winning singer Alicia Villarreal steps away from that unnecessary title and delivers a STUNNING personal performance of mariachi-influenced music, done her way with her golden voice. And she is AWESOME, showing her versatility in every way. No mere copying the most popular mariachi 'serenatas', waltzes, and polkas, she puts her personal stamp on a great selection of songs. Going from a whisper to soaring above the trumpets and strings, she is magnificent, flamboyant, and in control. All sung in Spanish with no translation necessary since the music is laden with pure emotion and sensuality.

The 'Pieces De Resistance, the best of the best, are all 10 songs. Each one is a jewel in itself. But I especially like the awesome "Enredo" (~Tangle) with it's shifting time signatures and restless, skipping beat. "Qué Te Parece" (What It Seems To You) and "Las Mujeres Olvidadas" (The Forgotten Women) are incredible performances. The heartbreaking "Insensible a Ti (Me Pone a Mil)" was #1 on the Mexican Billboard charts and, beyond her outstanding vocal, is notable for the arrangement and background execution over which she SOARS in a very touching way. "Ni Por Interesada" takes us deep into Mexico and back in time in a wonderful way. This CD could serve as a very good introduction to Mariachi music. Alicia Villarreal was destined to sing Mariachi and is casting a spell across Latin America with her total musical artistry. My Highest Recommendation. A sensational performance worthy of more than Five Stars!

(*This review is based on a 10 track ITunes download.

*For those who wonder about her authenticity, Alicia headlined the 2006 Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference Spectacular Concert in New Mexico at the Pan American Center with some of the cream of crop of Mariachi groups performing along side. She's the Real Deal. )"
UNREAL!! Alicia's voice is OUTSTANDING!!!!

"This album is perfection in one word; it has beautiful songs w/beautiful arrangements and a singer with the most beautiful voice and raw passion. PLEASE buy this album; you won't be disappointed. I have all of Alicia Villarreal's songs, from when she was in Grupo Limite singing in a tejano/norteño style and she is amazing no matter what, but her rancheras are truly special; her voice was made for the genre. To make a comparison, this mariachi album of hers is equally as solid as her earlier 'Soy Lo Prohibido' but in my opinion the songs on that were simply inimitable; that is by far her best CD; the choice of songs you cannot surpass. Regardless, this album too, is magnificent in its own right; thanks to Alicia Villarreal and her impeccable taste as well as talent. Gracias Alicia!"
