CD Reviews

Not as "Light" as I Had Hoped
Janet Boyer | Pennsylvania | 09/08/2008
(2 out of 5 stars)

"With a sunny yellow cover and the title Light, one would think you couldn't go wrong with this CD by Alex Theory, published by Sounds True.

Well, unfortunately, there's little diversity in Light. Basically, there are seven tracks of sporadic singular chime notes, sometimes tinkling, sometimes sounding like a high-pitched gong or a flick on a crystal bowl.

It's sort of creepy sounding, like a slo-mo soundtrack to a 2001-type space movie.

There is no music, no chanting--just the monotonous, yet regular, singular note hanging in rather dead air (except for the occasional melancholy, almost threatining sounding, whale-like background tones). It might make for a good backdrop for a haunted house or Halloween party, but I hardly think this was the intent of the artist or publisher...

I suppose if you're into minimalistic tones for meditation purposes, this may be your thing, but I feel that rather evoking a sense of stillness, focus and illumination, Light creates an ambience of distinct uneasiness.

(P.S. My almost 10-year-old enjoys this CD, calling is "space music". He asked if he could have it for his collection. Go figure!)

Deeply relaxing music
Rajbir | 11/29/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Unlike the other reviewer, I found this music to be deeply relaxing, it induces a sense of calmness and induces a relaxation response at a subliminal level. Perfect for going deeply within, bringing a feel of mental calmness. It is also very helpful if you are trying self-hypnosis. It is good it doesn't have chants etc. there are many CDs for that kind of stuff. Alex's other cd Water is also perfect for self-hypnosis music as a background."
