CD Reviews

El Alma de un Poeta
Gabriel | Puerto Rico | 10/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

Happy Accidents or......how I learned to love Alejandro!
douglas barton | Arlington, Va. | 12/23/2001

"Perhaps I should preface this review with a confession. Which, simply put, is that I do not speak a word of Spanish. No, not one...which of course begs the question, ' why am I reviewing a disc sung entirely in a language that I cannot understand? ' I'm glad you asked! In all actuallity my finding out about this incredible artist ( be warned: many more superlatives to come! ) was nothing more than a 'happy accident.' While at a listening station, attempting to ( obviously ) listen to a certain artist at a local record store, I punched the incorrect corresponding number and Alejandro came pouring out of the speakers. Well, realizing my mistake do you think I promptly pushed the right digit. Absolutely not! " Cuando Nadia Me Ve " came straight at me and with my curiosity piqued I listened to the second selection as well, that being " Hay Un Universo ". From that point on I was past the point of no return! By the time I got to track no. 7 " Me Ire' " I was in absolute awe of this young man who sang with such an incredible passion and sheer abandonment that I purchased my own copy and have been joyfully listening ever since. I 'm not quite sure how to review a disc by an artist who simply gives so much of himself in his music that I feel almost honoured that he is sharing his talents with us. I will state without hesitation that tracks 2-5 are without a doubt the most revelatory music that I have had the pleasure of enjoying for so many years. " Para Que Me Quieras " is in itself worth the price of this album but let's not mince words....everything here is done with pinpoint precision and with an integrity that I really miss in most of today's English speaking artists. Nothing here sounds even remotely calculated or disingenious. And it isn't just Alejandro's voice that conveys these emotions but also the musicianship which is not only creative but imaginative ( there's a word I don't get to use very often ) plus performed by truly first-rate musicians as well! And kudo's to producer Emanuele Ruffinengo who did a splendid job in tying all these loose ends together. By the time Alejandro get's to the last track, that being " Silencio " I am generally emotionally spent but....all the happier for the experience that he gives the listener. Bravo indeed! Obviously I'm quite sold on Alejandro Sanz and I simply defy anyone who purchases " Al Alma Al Aire " not to enjoy it almost as much as I do.... regardless of your affinity for Spanish! And if you do purchase your very own copy, for whatever reasons, feel free to e-mail me and let me know what you think. I've kept Alejandro a secret up to this point but now that my secret is out I'm curious as to how other listener's may respond to this amazing young man. Accidents not withstanding.... I can't even recall, who was I trying to really listen to that day?"
This guy has real talent

"Gotta be honest - I've never heard of this guy until I saw his performance on the Grammy's. I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I was completely blown away. Since I loved the song he performed on the broadcast ("Quisiera Ser," with Destiny's Child), I figured start with the CD that one is on. I can't understand why he's not more popular in America. He's got real talent and an ability to communicate his feelings that transcends any language barriers. Yes, he obviously uses Flamenco rhythms, but there's also a lot of American-influenced jazz and popular standard. Given the fodder we're fed in music these days, it's refreshing to hear someone as musically alive as Alejandro Sanz. If his marketing promoters are smart, they'll release a single of the "Quisiera" version with the translation by Destiny's Child. It worked, and it would open him to a broader American market. He's one of those artists that when you hear one CD, you want to get another. He's that good."
