CD Reviews

Good Stuff
06/07/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Good Latin-influenced world fusion jazzbo stuff from the early Seventies. Free boasts a stellar cast (Keith Jarrett, George Benson, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea), all of whom are caught in reasonably pleasant, upbeat, poppish moods, so anyone looking for anything challenging ought to be warned. (It's not any of these guys' best effort, but they ain't exactly stinkin' up the place, either.) The standout track is "Free", a multi-percussionist free jazz freakout that boasts a lot of weird grunting and moaning and growling. It's as though Airto stuck in a few rain forest animals from his native Brazil."
Great Jazz CD

"Really interesting line up of guests, this is the best recording of Keith Jarrett's standard, "Lucky Southern," maybe because it's the only one with Jarrett actually playing on (his best known composition, doesn't appear on any of his CDs or records)."
