CD Reviews

Let's get surprised!
Marcelo Morales - elintruso@yahoo.c | Buenos Aires, Argentina | 07/25/2000

"First of all, I have to say that Adrian Iaies is an argentine pianist. He's 38 years old and this, his second album with his trio, is one of the things most incredible that I've heard in so much time. This double CD is the continuity of the predecessor "Nostalgias y otros vicios", a real jewel. But is in "Las Tardecitas..." where Iaies confirms that is one of the greates musicians appeared in the last years, after the dead of the "master" Astor Piazzolla. The "formula" consists in re-version old tangos in a jazz style, but is very interesting the game that Iaies offers with jazz standards played as they were tangos (incredible versions of "Round Midnight" and "You and the night and the music" in piano-bandoneon duets). But he's not only a pianist; he's a very good composer and an impressive arranger. The horizon is expanding because of the nomination to a "Grammy latino" for this record, but musically, the horizon has no limits. Here in Argentine is too hard to survive being a serious musician. His tenacity and obviously his talent are making of Iaies a kind of "boom" that he never expected, but he has done efforts enough for this recognition. About the record... what can I say? Eighteen themes where the musical universe expands more and more. His own compositions are incredible; the duet in "Valsecito para una rubia tremenda" reminds the nice work of Dave Douglas with Guy Klucevsek in "Charms of the Night Sky", and "El Patron de la Vereda" and "Juarez el Casamentero" are simply fantastic. The versions of "Chiquilin de Bachin", "Vida Mia", "Naranjo en Flor", "Cafetin de Bs. As", "Sur" and "Vida Mia", will surprise to those who are familiarized with the old tangos; and will be very well surprised. Adrian Iaies is going to be, without any doubt, one of the most referencial musicians in the near future. Hear "Las tardecitas de Mintons" and you'll agree with me. Marcelo Morales."

"Tango standards sounds like jazz? Jazz standards sounds like Tango? Not at all, here are two records that show that music is only good or bad, fortunately Monk, Ellington, Evans, Piazzolla, Gardel, Salgan are in the same place. Iaies knows it, and play one of the best records than I've ever heard lately. Please pay attention to this guy."
Outstanding smoky jazz renditions of Argentine tango and mor

"If you're a fan of tango and of New York jazz piano bars, you're going to adore the treatment Argentine pianist, Adrian Iaies gives these songs. Imagine smoky jazz renditions of Carlos Gardel standards like "Amores de Estudiante", "El Dia Que Mi Quieras" and "Volver."

If you thought Astor Piazzolla had tango jazzed up to the max, wait until you hear Iaies' interpretation of Piazzolla's "Chiquilin de Bachin." Simply brilliant!

Not all the songs are of Argentine origin, but they are all wonderfully performed here. For example, Iaies does Thelonious Monk proud with his take on "Round Midnight."

When I heard the audio samples on Amazon I knew I had to have this album. When it arrived I discovered the description isn't correct. This is really a 2-CD set.
