CD Reviews

Really? Rhymesayers put this out?
J. Olsen | 07/22/2009
(2 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this CD today, and with tempered expectations, popped it into my car's CD player and took a drive. A few tracks in, I knew I'd made a mistake in paying $14 for this album, and before I knew it I was skipping tracks at their halfway points. I really don't think I'll even give this album a second chance. All the tracks had the same slow, grooving vibe to them--hardly any variation in style. Vitamin D's beats are just lacking here, fellow top Seattle beat smith Jake One just puts D to shame these days. And Abstract puts out some of the most mainstream, pop-friendly lyrics on this release I've heard from him. Elementary concepts and elementary rhymes, little originality (other than his still-unique voice).

And it was just a day ago I was disappointed by another Rhymesayers release, the new E&A album. What happened to Rhymesayers? Years ago you couldn't pick a bad album from their catalog if you tried. The reason I am giving this album two stars instead of one is that, flaws despite, it is still better than most of the mainstream stuff out there, so it does still have its merit. And AR does still have his unique voice and occasionally unique delivery. But this one just falls flat, and I'm really disappointed that it has the Rhymesayers name on it."
