Aaron Goldberg Trio Delivers!
Anthony R. Guarriello | Rutherfordton NC | 05/22/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Home the new album by the Aaron Goldberg trio which consists of three of NYC's most inventive jazz men. Aaron Golderg on piano who to my knowledge made his first major label appearance on the Joshua Redman album Beyond in 2000, since then Goldberg has been in high demand playing with guitar god Kurt Rosenwinkle appearing on his last live album The Remedy - Live At The Village Vanguard also adding killer fender rhodes& piano to sax man Bob Reynolds first albumCan't wait for perfect. On bass is one of my favorites Reuben Rogers, who in my opinion is a bit underrated, Rogers was also in Joshua Redman's band with Goldberg where they no doubt honed their effortless section work into what we hear here on Home. On drums the incomparable Eric Harland who is everywhere these days, he's held the drum chair in the SF Jazz Collective since it was founded, works with Rogers in Charles Lloyd's quartet & has worked with jazz piano master McCoy Tyner & many more. When you listen to the ten cuts herein you hear that these three musicians really know each other, this trio has been together for ten years. They are also joined here on some tracks by saxman Mark Turner. They open up with Cancion Por La Unidad Latina which has a very latin classical feel & reminds me very much of the opener Lambada De Serpente on their 1st album Worlds, Mark Turner joins in & delivers beautiful melodic statements. Track 2 Shed has a more active groove sounding similar to the Avishai Cohen trio. Track 3 Homeland is a haunting waltz that starts very subtle before blossoming into a nice steady groove giving way to Rogers & Goldberg solos. Track 4 I Mean You is a up tempo piece with the trio engaging in neat call & response interplay before swinging hard during a wild piano solo then wrapping it up quick & precise. The Rules is the Mark Turner feature, Mark is sounding more like Coltrane crossed with Joe Henderson, Eric Harland takes a killer solo over some awesome piano & bass unison lines. Track 7 is at the present my favorite which happens to be a killer latin tinged up tempo version of Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely which has Goldberg burning over a really hip vamp which frames the familiar melody then leading into a straight ahead swinging piano solo & concludes with all three players turning it out. I'd buy the album just for this track! The Sound of Snow is another nice ballad & they close out joined again by Turner for a romp through some mid tempo blues. That does it, I hope I'v provided the reader with something to go on. I'll close saying this album has flavors of most of the classic piano trios from Keith Jarrett to Bill Evans framed by Eric Harlands awesome ability to make it swing with that global groove that is his signature. Each member of this trio puts up the goods check it out."
