CD Reviews

At least 4 totally memorable, catchy UK pop punk hits here

(4 out of 5 stars)

"'Fellin' Alright with the Crew', 'High Energy Plan, 'Homicide' and my favorite of a great set here, 'Let's Face It (the boy can't make it with girls)'. I probably literally haven't heard this lp (I guess 2 combined) in about 20 years. But I did buy this. Sure enough, the hits are awesome. However, the non-hits, that is 3/4's of the songs, are just ordinary. They've got a coupla live albums and I never cared much for them. But this studio stuff is perfection. I'll definitely vouch for these four songs though. Lively vocals, very memorable refrains and tight, radio perfect songs that, of course, never got played on U.S. corporate conservative radio (that I can remember). Some punx I knew back in the day (early 80's) had their records, typically maybe 1 or 2 of 'em. BUZZCOCKS were definitely more known and have been longer lasting. The VIBRATORS Pure Mania is a bit similar and is musically immortal but, they didn't last either. 999 brought tons of joy to my musical life and now I can't wait to get hold of this or some other combo like a Complete Singles CD or something. Those 4 songs are some of the tighest, strongest in fun punk ever. chrisbct@hotmail.com"
Cool Disc, Great To Get Into 999

"Just got this disc today, and I've been playing it for a couple of hours at work, it's a great release. I could play this to one of my younger co workers and they'd think it was just released, I honestly believe. The music really doesn't sound dated in any way, I mean I'm a big fan of The Clash, The Beat, Specials, Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Chords, a lot of other bands from 1979ish and this one sounds fresher than most of those, it might be the simplicity of the group, also the recording is crisp and clean which helps to keep it from seeming dated, reminds me of The Hives kinda. I think there are more than 4 hits here, I think at least half of these songs are cool and compared to many recent discs where there is only two songs worth a damn this one I can pretty much play right though. I got this for about the same price of either of the original releases on CD, so if you want 999 get this and maybe the hits one that doesnt repeat most of these and I think you'd be pretty good at minimum bucks (or quid)."
