Synopsis

Album Description
Following in the footsteps of Ace's earlier retrospective of the 5 Royales' best 1950s King recordings ("It's Hard But It's Fair") comes this equally essential collection that chronicles their activities in the early 1960s. Presented in best-ever sound, here are 14 of their finest sides for the Memphis-based Home Of The Blues label - including the highly collectable Northern Soul and `Beach Music' favourite that is the title track. Many will want to buy this CD on the strength of this one track alone. Also included are the complete Federal recordings of their lead guitarist and chief songwriter Lowman "El" Pauling and their pianist Royal "The Royalton" Abbit - all making their CD debut - plus three solo Pauling sides that were recorded for (but not issued by) HOTB. Superbly soulful harmonies and stupendous guitar work make these tracks as vital now as they were when first released 45+ years ago. It's often said that 60s soul groups would not have sounded the way they did without the 5 Royales to point the way. Here's the proof of that statement.

Five Royale fans & early Soul fanatics - Pick this one up!!
James K. Power | North Bergen, NJ USA | 06/28/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"WOW! That was my initial reaction! I've loved The Five Royales for years, but was only familiar with their 1950's R&B material. I never knew they cut these great early soul tracks! From the opening notes of 'Show Me', my jaw dropped!

It seems clear that at this point in their career they were in competition with the early work of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Hearing Johhny Tanner sing in a more gospelly manner was a revelation!

All I can say is that if you like early 60's soul (Pickett, Burke, James Brown), and are in awe of the magic the Five Royales produced in the 50's, this CD is the missing link of R&B to Soul!
