"New York City-based group 4 by Four hit the scene in 1987 to a lukewarm reception. The album had very little fanfare, as the group came off as a cross between New Edition and the Jackson 5, but couldn't hold their own with either of them. The disc featured tracks of basically meat-and-potatoes rehashes (e.g., they mostly all sounded alike), but had a moderate slow-jam hit in "Come Over," which received great late-night quiet-storm play mainly because it was written by then-Ready for the World lead singer Melvin Riley, Jr. A close listen to this track reveals the lead singer attempting to moan and croon just like Riley. Other single releases from this album were "Want You For My Girlfriend" and "Don't Put The Blame On Me." After this album, they were never heard from again, and rightfully so. They just did not have the musical tools to be viewed as anything but a novelty. However, if you can find this cd, it now commands a high price as a long-out-of-print collector's item. Thankfully, I bought mine when it first came out."
