CD Reviews

RIP: Ian Wallace

"I finally picked this up after feeling a little strange about picking up an album of KC covers. Yeah, I know most of the band were members of King Crimson but still only one solo track and the rest KC songs. I am now kicking myself for waiting so long. This is a great release and the band does a great job of performing classics that King Crimson no longer does but also throws in it's own twist. After all, 2004 where are you going to find a line up this great(Ian McDonald, Mel Collins, Peter Giles, Ian Wallace, and Jackko Jakszyk performing songs like In The Court Of The Crimson King, Cat Food and CirKus. If you like King Crimson you'll like this."

"So Far, {No, I don't own, "Live in Italy"...Yet} for my Bucks, this is the Best Live Recording by the Schizoid Band, you can purchase in the [...] World.

These two CD's are taken from Two Shows in New York City, from Tuesday, 27 April 2004. This Edition of Schizoid Men features Ian Wallace on the Drumkit and Various Percussion Devices {The Great Michael Giles, departed after the Japanese Tour of November 2002}. Mr. Wallace gives the Schizoid Band a lot more Thud & Thump than Michael {Who is about the Most Inventive and Creative, of all the "Crimso" Drummers). Ian is a 'Heavy' Drummer and what he adds here is...POWER, POWER and more POWER.

All the other Schizoid members remain the same: Ian McDonald plays Saxophones, Flutes, Keyboards and Sings, Mel Collins plays Saxophones, Flutes, Keyboards and backing Vocals, Jakko M. Jakszk has the Hardest Task, that being The Guy who plays the Robert Fripp Guitar Parts, AND Singing Greg Lake's Lead Vocal Parts {No Weight on his Shoulders!}. And we shant forget: Peter Giles, who plays Bass Guitar and Sings some Harmony.

There are 15 tracks over the Course of these Two CD's and we get a Wealth of Music from King Crimson {1969-1974}. "Epitath", "Cirkus", "Catfood", "A Sailors Tale", "Starless" and even a New Composition from Jakko; "Cately's Ashes". There is more "Improv" featured here than in the 2002 edition of the Band, {Check Out the Wild, Middle Section of: "21st Century Schizoid Man"}. And these Men have indeed improved with age. This is AN AMAZING BAND. I am not prone to throw out a "Five Star" Rating, lighly...BUT, this Fantastic Double CD Set; "Pictures of A City ~ Live In New York" has Great Music played by Great Musicians in a Great Live Setting. The Music of King Crimson, is Alive & Well...RIGHT HERE!

FIVE STARS !!!

** A Note of Sadness: Ian Wallace, has Passed Away. The Spirit and Drive that Flowed from Ian, and Powered this Band, will be indeed, Sorely Missed! Rock On, Ian !!!"
