CD Reviews

Super-diverse offering from this groovy German ensemble
Joe Sixpack -- Slipcue.com | ...in Middle America | 10/09/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Alternately kooky and beautiful, this far-flung German ensemble combines some of the insistent outsider experimentalism of The Ex, et al with the mellow amorphous poppiness of Polyphonic Spree, as well as the workmanlike, joyful competence of Paris Combo... Yes, it's the sound of a large number of amiable, unhurried musicians for whom the act of making music -- and having fun while you do it -- is an end in and of itself. Their love of collaboration and exploration will come through loud and clear to receptive listeners: if you're into Balkan brass bands, French accordion music, Jewish klezmer and gypsy swing or even ethereal indie ballads, you'll probably enjoy this album a lot. The Hippies flow from style to style, with each strand woven together in a surprisingly cohesive whole. Recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack)"
A World Odyssey
L. A. Day | South of Southwest, USA | 09/23/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I just caught 17 Hippies on tour in the US and bought this CD and another. They are amazing live, full of energy, and infinitely present with the audience while performing. This CD is an extension of that live raw energy, with wild and wonderful gypsy/Cajun/Klezmer/Eastern music sung in French, German, and English. Rather than clash as a large group, they will blow your mind with their innate ability to flow and synchronize; they love their music which becomes infectious! After several listens, these tunes curl up with you and become as old friends.....songs this beautiful can and should linger. [...]"

"... and lots of fun. An exciting blend of klezmer, gypsy, rock cabaret and jazz with strains of melancholy. Wow!"
