CD Reviews

The complete 13th Floor Elevators' singles in monaural.

"I already had the Roky comp, I Have Always Been Here Before, some of these songs are included there although most are the stereo versions from the lps. When it comes to sixties archival material, I'm all about the singles and all about the mono mix, when available. Here we have both for the 7 singles released by the 13th Floor Elevators during their breif existence. The final four tracks, in stereo, except for You're Gonna Miss Me, are the singles from a French ep with excellent fidelity, so I'm happy they're included here, as well. The single version of Slip Inside This House is greatly edited from it's 8 minutes on the Easter Everywhere lp but since that longer version is on the Roky comp, I'm happy to have the much harder to find mono edit. All of these nuggets are from the best available sources and remastered in punchy mono. This is my first Elevators purchase, it's a real good fit for me, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a better synopsis of their best efforts.

Tried to Hide but Now Found

"I bought this solely for the B-side single version of "Tried to Hide," which I loved in the '60s. The slower album version, which is on most compilations as well, sounds like the boys recorded it on grass; the faster single version sounds jittery with caffeine (or, OK, speed); its tight arrangement, with instruments dropping in and out, is reminiscent of the Music Machine. The French EP tacked on to the end of this fine album is the album version; compare the two and you'll see what I mean.

The annotations are astounding, with a scholarly attention to detail worthy of a bibliographic monograph. Great sound, great package, great price."
Nice for the collector

"This CD is as stated the Singles Collection. While I have all the albums and on CD, this collection is a nice addition to my collection.

I agree with the other two positive reviews here and not the one that gave it one star.

Yes the recordings have been upmixed and I LIKE them, alot in fact. I have all sorts of 13th Floor Elevators recordings, both studio and live as well as videos on some old VHS tapes and bootlegs tapes, interviews and such. I would say I am very into anything from Roky and crew.

This release of singles and more is well packaged, it's a cardboard cover (looking like similar to Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff Remix Deluxe for example). But not just a slide in the box but opens like a book. Inside is a very nice booklet covering information on all the singles in great detail with alot of color and black & white pictures and run down information on each release. Very well done and detailed. Also included is a booklet in a slip sleeve for the International Artists catalog. The label/sticker that is on the plastic wrap states "The complete mono 45 RPM singles mixes, plus the rare Riviera Records Stero 4-Track EP". Nice to see this also included.

About the mixes, yes they are beefed up. I am used to the old muddy recordings of these songs. The upmix is Loud and I dig it. It brings up effects and sounds that were once muddled in the old original mixes to the front and in your face. Roky and crew sound so awesome here. Generally I am not into remixes/upmixes and such, but when I first put this one I was like WOW, you can actually hear everything so clear while not taking away from their massive attack. Not un-psychedelisized at all. Very trippy to hear tones, noise effects, cymbal-high-hat drumming, harmonica, thundering bass lines, bluesy sweet guitar licks and vocals with everything intact are SO powerful and electic-jug so up front that you could hardly hear before. Like Roky's spazzy spouts and yelps. Wicked. It's like you were in the studio with them Now at the moment. I am not saying the old 45's were not awesome at all, but hearing these this way is different, and in a great way. This CD is not messing with the songs to restructure them, but to move up the intensity of their sound. Every little strum of the guitars are intense. The 13th Floor Elevators were a LOUD band, of course especially live so in the original mixes they were at times toned down for marketing. Like listening to them live, as I stated they were very loud and full of trippy sounds. So hearing these superior clearer mixes is a treat, and in clearer I mean you can hear every little noise subdued by the studios. Remember back in the day when they did record in the studio, they were not recorded nor mixed very well. I take that in stride because the music is so awesome, but as an alternative again for the 13th Floor fan this is a must have in your collection (if like me, very large).

5 stars for the whole package, 5 for the collection on 1 CD, and 5 for the Loud mixes. A welcomed addition to a very important 60s psycedelic-mind blowing band that if I recall correctly was the first to use the term "psychedelic" to describe their sound as in "The Psychedelic Sounds of..."... Fans and collectors will appreciate this. It rocks your socks and mind off...

Like just for example, put on track 5: "(I've Got) Levitation" and tell me this is not awesome! All that is missing in this package is that certain 3 letters from the Labs of SanDoz that often came on a sugar cube as you Slip Inside This House. Have fun!!!
