Some of the most romantic music ever composed has been written for the piano and this collection includes discs of music by Chopin, Rachmaninov and Liszt, and is framed by discs, one dedicated to Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert, and the other to the French composers, Debussy, Ravel and Satie.
Two discs are dedicated to Chopin, played by one of the greatest exponents of his music in modern times, Vladimir Ashkenazy, who also features heavily in the disc devoted to the music of Rachmaninov, where he appears as both pianist and conductor, accompanying Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
A further disc features the music of Franz Liszt, beautifully played by Jorge Bolet, while Radu Lupu, András Schiff and Ashkenazy champion the music of Mozart, Beethoven. In the final CD, Pascal Roge is beguiling in the music of the French composers.
With a total running time of well over seven and a half hours, this represents outstanding value for money and will be welcomed by both casual lovers and serious collectors of piano music.
